Diamonds - LifeGem

LifeGem is a company offering to synthesize diamonds from the carbonized remains of people or pets. According to Dean VandenBiesen, speaking on the Stan and Terry show May 7, 2007, the company recently became able to create a diamond from a lock of hair. The company was founded in 2001 by Greg Herro, Mike Herro, Rusty VandenBiesen, and Dean VandenBiesen, and was first based in Elk Grove Village, Illinois. It is now headquartered in Chicago and a second office, under the name LifeGem UK, was recently opened in Hove, England.

The gems

These synthetic diamonds—precisely duplicate natural diamonds in both optical and physical properties—are touted as “memorial diamonds” and range in price from USD $2,500 for 0.20–0.29 carat (40 to 59 mg) stones to $14,000 for stones weighing 0.90–0.99 carats (180–199 mg). The company can extract enough purified carbon from one human body to synthesize up to 50 gems weighing one carat (0.2 g) each. As little as 227 g of remains are needed to make one diamond. Diamonds made from the cremains of pets are priced the same as those made from human remains, but the size of the animal may be a limiting factor. As of March 2005, LifeGem says it has served 1,000 families since the company’s founding.

The process

The carbon from the remains is converted to graphite after purification, from which point it is placed in a diamond synthesis press. The diamonds are made via the thermal gradient method using alloys as a flux at pressures of 5.0–6.0 GPa and temperatures of 1,600–2,000 °C. The entire process, from cremation to finished stone, takes up to six months for fancy yellow LifeGem diamonds and up to nine months for fancy blue LifeGem diamonds.

Due to boron impurities present in the carbon, most LifeGem synthetic diamonds produced up to 2003 were Type IIb and were a light to medium blue in colour. Iron flux inclusions within the stones also rendered them magnetic. The synthesis process has since been modified: Current production consists of strong yellow to golden yellow and Type IIb blue diamonds.

Three standard diamond cuts are offered to customers: Round brilliant, radiant, and princess (the latter two cuts are rectangular and square in outline, respectively). The company will also take requests for custom cuts. The finished stones are laser inscribed with an identifier (and a tribute for an extra fee), graded by gemologists, and are given a signed certificate of authenticity which contains a LifeGem ID#.

Diamonds - Pumpkin Diamond

The Pumpkin Diamond is a diamond measuring 5.54 carats (1.108 g) rated in color as Fancy Vivid Orange by the Gemological Institute of America. While this may seem relatively small when compared to other famous diamonds, the Pumpkin Diamond is, in fact, one of the largest Fancy Vivid Oranges the GIA reports having rated and is unique compared to other orange diamonds because it is relatively light-colored and notably intense. The Pumpkin Diamond was mined in Central African Republic and then imported into South Africa for sale, it was later cut and polished by William Goldberg, and put to auction at Sotheby’s where it was bought by Ronald Winston of the House of Harry Winston for the price of $1.3 million. It is currently estimated to be valued at $3 million.

Formerly referred to simply as the 5.54 Vivid Orange, Winston named the diamond “The Pumpkin Diamond” as he bought it the day before Halloween. After buying the Pumpkin, Winston proceeded to have the diamond set in a ring between two smaller white diamonds. Halle Berry wore the ring to the 2002 Oscars where she won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in Monster’s Ball.

While it is difficult to tell exactly what status the Pumpkin Diamond currently enjoys, the official GIA web site reports it as “one of the largest Fancy Vivid orange natural color diamonds in the world.” The Color Diamond Encyclopedia, on the other hand, terms it “the world’s largest fancy vivid orange diamond.” In 1997, when it was purchased by The House of Harry Winston, the Gemstone Forecaster referred to it as “the only vivid orange ever graded by the GIA.”

The Pumpkin Diamond was displayed as part of the Smithsonian’s “The Splendor of Diamonds” exhibit, alongside The De Beers Millennium Star, the world’s largest top colour (D) internally and externally flawless pear-shaped diamond at 203.04 carat (40.608 g) and The Heart of Eternity, a 27.64 carat (5.528 g) heart-cut blue diamond.

Diamonds - Herkimer diamond

Herkimer diamond is the misnomerous name for double-terminated quartz first discovered in exposed outcrops of dolostone at Little Falls in Herkimer County, New York and the Mohawk River Valley. They became largely recognized after workmen discovered them in large quantities while cutting into the Mohawk River Valley dolostone in the late 1700s. Geologists discovered exposed dolostone in Herkimer County and began mining there. The popularity of mining for double-terminated quartz in the Herkimer County outcroppings is what lead to the name, Herkimer diamonds. Currently, Herkimer diamonds can be found in large quantity in at least Herkimer, Fulton, and Montgomery counties.

These quartz crystals, which formed extremely slowly in small pockets or vugs, have 18 facets (6 sides) and two terminations. They can be found clear, cloudy, or even containing a variety of rare impurities. Impurities (rare and general) can include clusters, scepters, enhydro, phantom, and bridge crystals. An enhydro contains a water pocket within the crystal, and a phantom is a crystal which contains an image of itself within.

The crystals referred to unofficially as “Herkimer Diamonds” are officially known as “Little Falls Diamonds” because they are found in a rock formation called “Little Falls Dolostone.”
Some years ago a resident of the village of Herkimer bought one of the diamond mines, and started calling the crystals Herkimer Diamonds, although none are found in the village. They are abundant in the City of Little Falls, and the public library there has a large display of the crystals.

Quality diamonds - Great Chrysanthemum Diamond

The Great Chrysanthemum Diamond is a diamond measuring 104.15 carats (20.830 g) with a Pear-Shaped Modified Brilliant Cut, rated in colour as Fancy Orange-Brown and I1 clarity by the Gemological Institute of America. The diamond’s origins are in South Africa, where it was bought by the jeweler Julius Cohen as a 198.28 carat (39.656 g) rough in 1963. After buying it, Cohen returned to New York where he had it cut into its distinctive pear shape by S&M Kaufman. Because of its colouring similarities to the brown chyrsanthemum, it was named after that flower.

The Great Chrysanthemum has been shown in a number of diamond exhibits throughout the United States. In 1965, the Chrysanthemum was named a winner of one of the Diamonds International Awards and was placed on display in the Rand Easter Festival in Johannesburg, South Africa. Julius Cohen later sold the diamond to an unknown and reputedly foreign buyer and was purchased by Garrards of London around 2003.

Quality diamonds - Kimberly, Arkansas

Kimberly is a ghost town south of Murfreesboro, Arkansas. The town grew up near John Huddleston’s diamond mine. Kimberly had a population of over 2,000 people. Wooden frame houses were built, some were made into stores, and other businesses. A bank, hotel, and other stores were also built here.

Kimberly was founded after John Huddleston found diamonds on his property. When prospectors came to find diamonds, real estate companies built homes for the prospectors, stores later came. Kimberly was named after Kimberly Diamond Mine in South Africa. Later population declined as people moved to other areas, such as Murfreesboro.

Huddleston’s diamond mine is now part of Crater of Diamonds State Park, where tourists can search for diamonds and keep any they find.

Diamonds - Brozel

Brozel is a method for intervening against an opposing 1NT opening bid. It features the following calls:

  • Double – shows any single suit; advancer bids 2♣, after which intervenor corrects to his actual suit (or passes with clubs). This was originally played as requiring either a solid suit or a very good suit and an entry, leaving advancer the opportunity to pass with a couple of side-suit stoppers, though many partnerships now allow a weaker suit.
  • 2♣ – shows clubs and hearts
  • 2♦ – shows diamonds and hearts
  • 2♥ – shows hearts and spades
  • 2♠ – shows spades and an unspecified minor suit
  • 2NT – shows clubs and diamonds

The convention is named loosely after its creator, Bernard Zeller.
