Diamond willow is willow distinctively shaped as the result of attack by fungus (Valsa sordida, and possibly others), which has resulted in a diamonding effect occurring in the wood of the shrub or tree as the tree forms cankers, or diamonds (elongated ovals with pointed ends), in response to the infection, according to Lutz (see reference below). Lutz is careful to indicate that this is the most likely–but not necessarily definitive–cause of diamonding in willows.

There are at least six different species that have been identified as having diamonds, including Salix bebbiana, S. pseudomonticola, S. arbusculoides, S. discolor, S. scouleriana, and S. alaxensis. Other species may also be found with diamonding. Diamond Willow is also a common name for Salix eriocephala, also known as Heartleaf Willow.

The diamonding is usually found with a branch at its center or is found in the Y of a tree. Diamonding in willow does not seem to be specific to an area that willows grow in, and where one bunch of willow will have diamonds, the next clump of willows may have none at all. Although diamond willow is often thought of as being a northern phenomenon, of the boreal forest, there is mention of diamond willow growing as far south as Missouri.

Diamond willow is prized by wood carvers and furniture makers for its strong contrasting colors (red and white) and its sculptural irregularity of shape.

Diamond formation and shape

The tree grows diamond-shaped cankers in response to the fungus. The cankers seem to result from the tree growing away from the site of attack. This usually happens at the crotch of a branch on a larger branch or main stem. If the branch is relatively small it seems to die very quickly. If the branch is larger, it may continue to grow and the diamond is formed on the branch and the stem. By growing away from the fungus, new layers of growth occur further and further away from the site of the fungal attack. Thus the affected area gets larger and deeper. If the tree has been affected in several places close together, then the diamonds run into each other. This can result in pronounced ridges if some sapwood continues to survive, or it may strangle the small ridge of sapwood, which then dies.

The shape of the diamonds seems to vary from one clump of willow to the next, although there may be some general tendencies within a single species. Some stems will form long narrow diamonds; others will be short and wide. Usually all the diamonds on the stems in one clump will have similar growth patterns. If the new layers of sapwood do not move back very much each year, then the diamonds will be deep bowl- or cleft-shaped. These stems will be able to survive longer than those whose diamonds are flat and open.

The bark that is left overtop of the diamond changes quite markedly from the bark over the living sapwood. Depending on the species of willow, the living bark is usually smoother and slightly lighter in color. The bark over the diamond usually becomes rougher and somewhat darker. It also becomes tougher and adheres much more to the underlying wood. The sapwood is white to cream in color–again depending on the species, but also on the location. The heartwood is reddish-brown. This color tends to darken with exposure to light over a number of years.

If one stem in a clump of willow is affected, then all of them are likely to be. However, the neighboring clump may be completely without diamonds. As a side note, Lutz reported seeing Quaking Aspen (Populus tremuloides) in Alaska that had depressions very similar to those in diamond willow.

The Ocean Dream is a diamond measuring 5.51 carats (1.102 g), rated in color as Fancy Deep Blue-Green by the Gemological Institute of America. The Ocean Dream is the only natural diamond known to the GIA to possess a blue-green hue, making it one of the rarest diamonds in the world. (A blue-green colour is commonly seen in artificially enhanced diamonds, whose colour is imparted by various irradiation methods.) After careful study, the GIA concluded that its distinct hue is a result of millions of years of exposure to natural radiation. The Ocean Dream originated in Central Africa, and is currently owned by the Cora Diamond Corporation.

The Ocean Dream was displayed as part of the Smithsonian’s “The Splendor of Diamonds” exhibit, alongside the De Beers Millennium Star, The Heart of Eternity and the Moussaieff Red.

“Diamonds and Pearls” is the title track to Prince and the New Power Generation’s 1991 hit album. The song is an upbeat ballad, given a rock and roll edge with guitar and heavy drumming. The song also features the powerful vocals of NPG member Rosie Gaines. The ballad is an expression of love and not lust, as is the theme on the some of the other singles from the album. The song was Top 10 hit, reaching #3 in the U.S., and the top spot on the R&B charts.

The B-side is a mix of excerpts of other Diamonds and Pearls tracks that serves to promote the album. There was no extended version of the song released. The U.K. B-side included some of the mixes on the “Cream” maxi-single.

The Excelsior Diamond was found on June 30, 1893 at the Jagersfontein Mine by a worker while loading a truck. The man was able to hide the diamond from the supervisors but delivered it to the manager of the mine himself. Until 1905, when the larger Cullinan diamond was found, the Excelsior was the largest known diamond in the world. It had a blue-white tint and weighed 971-3/4 carats (194.2 g). It was ultimately cut into ten stones weighing from 13 to 68 carats. (2.6 to 13.6 g). Immediately after its discovery the news spread around the world. For five centuries India boasted the largest diamond in the world and the Great Moghul and was finally surpassed by South Africa.

Also, Pusoy Dos has some differences in scoring.

Also called “pepito” in Ilocano.

Younger generations of Pusoy Dos players have begun using Pusoy Dos Taunts to successfully raise the entertainment aspect of Pusoy Dos. For example, Shaft Openers and Fantastic Wieners have been employed to further the game’s enjoyment.

Optional Variations

Hands consisting of two pairs are allowed in some versions of Pusoy Dos, while flushes and straight flushes are not allowed.

Main Variation

The most common variation played commonly by middle schoolers and high schoolers follows the rules as shown in Big Two with some differences. Firstly, there is no scoring. It’s round by round with no bigger goal. Secondly, three of a kind is not a valid hand. It must be broken up into pairs or used with a separate pair as a full house. Finally, it is a common practice to reshuffle if one is dealt all four twos. The one who is handed those is considered to have lost, ironically. However, people with four twos often lack other good cards and thusly lose anyway. Also, the order of suits from low to high respectively is clubs, spades, hearts, diamonds. If you’re playing someone, it’s like following this format.

Assuming that the magician wishes to produce the cards from his pocket at the end, he starts with the five of diamonds and the four of hearts in his pocket before presenting the trick. He then removes the five of hearts and the four of diamonds that are in the deck, and shows them together to the audience. These cards are re-inserted into the deck, which is then shuffled by the spectator. At the end, the magician produces the similar pair of cards that have been in his pocket all along, apparently the same cards which were shuffled into the deck.

The single’s B-side was reused from the “Gett Off” single, “Horny Pony“, a rap-pop song that was replaced at the last minute by “Gett Off” on Diamonds and Pearls. “Cream” was also released as a maxi-single EP with remixes and songs/raps loosely based on “Cream”. The EP was notable for including several prank telephone conversations.

In the UK, “Gangster Glam” was an additional B-side on the 12″/CD maxi single. In Japan, an EP was released with the tracks from the U.S. maxi single, and four tracks from the U.S. “Gett Off” maxi single.

Herkimer diamond is the misnomerous name for double-terminated quartz first discovered in exposed outcrops of dolostone at Little Falls in Herkimer County, New York and the Mohawk River Valley. They became largely recognized after workmen discovered them in large quantities while cutting into the Mohawk River Valley dolostone in the late 1700s. Geologists discovered exposed dolostone in Herkimer County and began mining there. The popularity of mining for double-terminated quartz in the Herkimer County outcroppings is what lead to the name, Herkimer diamonds. Currently, Herkimer diamonds can be found in large quantity in at least Herkimer, Fulton, and Montgomery counties.

These quartz crystals, which formed extremely slowly in small pockets or vugs, have 18 facets (6 sides) and two terminations. They can be found clear, cloudy, or even containing a variety of rare impurities. Impurities (rare and general) can include clusters, scepters, enhydro, phantom, and bridge crystals. An enhydro contains a water pocket within the crystal, and a phantom is a crystal which contains an image of itself within.

The crystals referred to unofficially as “Herkimer Diamonds” are officially known as “Little Falls Diamonds” because they are found in a rock formation called “Little Falls Dolostone.”
Some years ago a resident of the village of Herkimer bought one of the diamond mines, and started calling the crystals Herkimer Diamonds, although none are found in the village. They are abundant in the City of Little Falls, and the public library there has a large display of the crystals.

The company holds a 40% stake in the Diavik Diamonds Project. Production at the Diavik Diamond Mine, Canada’s second diamond mine, is operated by Aber’s joint venture partner, Diavik Diamond Mines Inc., a subsidiary of Rio Tinto Group. The mine began producing diamonds in November 2002.

Aber’s participation in the retail segment of the diamond pipeline is by means of its 51% controlling interest in Harry Winston, which they purchased in 2004. As of October 2006, Aber has a 100% ownership in Harry Winston.

Aside from its corporate office in Toronto, Aber Diamond also has a rough diamond sorting faciilty in Toronto and a marketing office in Antwerp, Belgium. A winkle is a rare squeeze/endplay in contract bridge in which a trick is offered to the defenders but whichever wins the trick is then endplayed. Often one defender would be forced to offer a finesse or ruff and discard while the other could overtake and thereby promote a trick in that suit for declarer.

An example end-position, South needing 4 tricks:

On the play of the last spade, West and North let go clubs, and East is squeezed. Pitching a heart yields an immediate trick in that suit, but if a diamond is pitched declarer follows with Ace and 3 of diamonds. If East wins the trick, they must lead hearts conceding the last two tricks there. If West saves partner by playing the king of diamonds on the second diamond trick, they must then concede the last two tricks to dummy’s now high Ace of clubs and Jack of diamonds.

A four-color deck is identical to the standard Anglo-American playing cards except for the color of the suits. In a typical four-color deck, hearts are red and spades are black as usual, but clubs are green and diamonds are blue. However, other color combinations have been used over the centuries.

Four color decks are not a new idea, and have been around in America for a very long time. In 1819, J.Y. Humphreys created the “Seminole Wars Deck” which had four colored suits of blue spades, green clubs, red hearts and yellow diamonds. In 1876, for the American Centennial, Victor Mauger issued a deck that contained black spades, red hearts, yellow diamonds and blue clubs.

These four-color decks made for bridge or whist, are often called no-revoke decks because they are perceived to reduce the risk of a player accidentally revoking (illegally playing a card of a suit other than that led.) Many dozens of card manufacturers have developed four colored suit cards for Bridge during the 1900s and continue into this century. S.R. Huntley created many Bridge decks, which included his stylized four color pips of black spades, red hearts, orange diamonds and blue clubs. Some of his decks included “forcing” instructions printed on each card for play. In 1947, a deck of playing cards of bridge size, from Forcolor Inc., introduced a deck with black spades, red hearts, green clovers (three-leaved, not the french club shape,) and orange diamonds. In 1948, the Avoid Playing Card Company, introduced a deck of the same name with black spades, red hearts, orange diamonds and purple clubs.

A four-color deck for poker was developed and publicised by Mike Caro. It was introduced at his World Poker Finals at Foxwoods Resort Casino in 1992. His original design was not a success due to the choice of colors. However, four-color decks have become a somewhat popular option in Internet poker software interfaces since often each player may use their preferred design of playing cards without affecting others’ experience, and since visibility is not as good on a small screen as in face-to-face play. Having each suit represented by a different color can allow players to more easily recognise a flush.

In the German game of skat the official tournament standard is to use four-color decks. In these, spades are green and diamonds are yellow, the hearts and clubs being respectively red and black as normal. This is intended as a compromise for players who prefer German suits.

Copag Playing Cards currently sells via their website a four color deck, featuring black spades, red hearts, blue diamonds and green clubs. The cards are 100% plastic and are sold as a pair. COPAG was honored as the official card for the 2005 World Series of Poker (though two-color decks were used there). More information about the manufacturer can be found at the official Copag company web site.

52 Plus Joker’s website displays a vintage Tarock deck designed for use in the United States, and has four colored suits, following a traditional no revoke pattern and was published in 1922 by August Petryl & Son. The deck was created with black clubs, yellow diamonds, dark pink hearts, and green spades.
